Recirculating Aquaculture Systems - Biofilters

The most important item in a Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) is a BIOFILTER.
Fish wastes are handled by the biofilters. A good and effective biofilters will ensure the water is kept clean and eventually reducing the potential of fish death.

There are generally 2 types of biofilters;

1. Bacteria
Biofilters provide a room for bacteria to live and grow. The more bacteria grow in the biofilters, the better and effectiver the biofilters are.

2. Root beds of plants
This can be done by flowing the water through a hydroponic systems. The plants get nutrients from the fish wastes which makes the water clean.

A good and effective biofilter provides a healthy environment in your pond. The water is always clean and not polluted. This kind of environment is very important for the fish.
